Turn an Image into Layers in Figma
LayerGrab for Figma is a plugin that takes a selected image or frame, splits it into separate named layers with AI, and places them as a group directly over the original, aligned to the pixel.

Release status
The Figma plugin is in testing and will be published on Figma Community. Until then, the web app does the same split and lets you copy any layer straight into Figma.

Select an image
Select one image, frame or group on the canvas.

Run LayerGrab
Open the plugin and click Split into Layers. It shows the current step and the seconds elapsed, with a Cancel button.

Wait about a minute
You can keep designing while it runs. The panel tells you when it is done or why it failed.

Use the layers
A group called LayerGrab appears above your selection with the filled background at the bottom and each element on its own layer.

Each element is a rectangle with the separated image as its fill, so you can move, resize, recolour or delete it like any other layer.
Readable names
Layers are named from what they show, which makes the layers panel usable without renaming everything.

When not to use it
- Vector output: layers are images, not editable vectors or text.
- Frames with auto layout: the new group follows the frame’s layout rules, so place the image in a regular frame first.
- Keeping cast shadows from the original image.
The plugin runs the same AI as the web app and uses the same account and credits. Want the layers as files instead of inside Figma? Export them as a layered PSD or single PNGs from the web app.

How do I turn a flat image into layers in Figma?
Select the image, run the LayerGrab plugin and click Split into Layers. After about a minute a group of named layers appears over the image, with the background filled in behind them.
Are the layers vectors?
No. Each layer is an image with a transparent background. You can move and resize it, but its shapes and text are pixels, not vector paths or text objects.
Does it work in the Figma desktop app and in the browser?
Yes. Figma plugins run the same way in both, on Windows and macOS.
Can I split only the text or only the product?
Yes. Type what you want separated before you run the split, for example "only the text", and the AI focuses on those elements.
